First MRI Compatible Pacemaker
Technology in the healthcare industry is always improving and making lives better around every turn. Without many of the inventions of the past, we would still be performing medical procedures in an archaic form. Thanks to improvements in technology, doctors know about abnormalities much sooner, can recommend and implement speedy solutions and can get us on the road to recover much more quickly than ever before.
FDA Approves first MRI Compatible Pacemaker
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a pacemaker that is compatible with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which is the first of its kind available to patients in the United States.
The device, Revo MRI SureScan pacing system, is revolutionary and will make MRIs safer for patients who use an electronic cardiac service. In the past, the magnetic field produced by MRIs would interfere with pacemakers putting patients at risk for tissue damage or unintended heart stimulation. The magnetic field produced by an MRI can be as much as 30,000 times more powerful than the Earth’s magnetic field. So the need for this type of MRI compatible pacemaker was important. This new technology will keep patients much more safe and put their minds at ease when considering an MRI. The FDA estimates that half of all patients with pacemakers will require an MRI scan in their lifetimes.
